OpenDOSM Nextgen: Unlocking the Power of Government Data for a More Transparent and Innovative Malay
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has launched OpenDOSM Nextgen, which is a platform that aims to improve access to official statistics produced by DOSM and other government agencies. The platform, which was officiated by Mohd Rafizi Ramli, the Minister of Economy, offers an upgraded user interface and improved functionality compared to the previous version.
According to the Minister of Economy, the open-data portal available to the public offers a clear understanding of the current developments impacting the nation, which could enhance the general public's knowledge and understanding of social and economic matters.
“By compiling, sorting and presenting data from various agencies into easy-to-read charts and numbers, the portal essentially serves the role of a data analytics team in a big company, where raw data from multiple branches is simplified into single charts for easy consumption by upper management,” he said.
One of the key benefits of the platform is that it encourages transparency and openness by making data sets freely available for download. Users can access raw datasets, tables, and charts and can also scrape data using the Python programming language. The platform currently contains data on a wide range of topics, including unemployment rates, exchange rates, Consumer Price Index, Gross Domestic Product, voting statistics, and information on Covid-19.
The platform covers eight main themes, including labour force, economic indicators, consumer prices, wholesale and retail trade, industrial production, national accounts, producer prices and health (covid-19). The scope of the dataset will continue to be expanded over time, covering more datasets from other agencies and ministries.
According to the Chief Statistician of the Statistics Department Malaysia (DOSM), Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, the portal has been integrated with DOSM’s KAWASANKU and the Health Ministry’s KKMNOW which further improve the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of the portal’s functions through the addition of vital demographic and medical data, the database now provides information in a machine-readable format.
